October 2, 2015

The Identity & Access Management (IAM) program at Harvard University Information Technology was pleased to present a first-round look at HarvardKey progress to the University's ABCD Committee, a Harvard-wide association promoting communication and collaboration on technology topics. Close on the heels of the first-wave HarvardKey launch — the new unified Harvard login credential made its debut to the Alumni community on Sep. 22, 2015 — IAM's presentation to ABCD on Oct. 2 offered a unique opportunity to recap the progress of one of the...

HarvardKey: Designed with Accessibility in Mind

September 14, 2015

As IT products and services at Harvard continue to grow and evolve, one key element of any new offering is always at the top of the developer and project leader mindset: Accessibility for all users, regardless of disabilities or different abilities, is critical to ensure that everyone has access to Harvard IT resources without any impediments.

So when it came time to ensure that the new HarvardKey authentication and user self-service applications met the mark for accessibility, the Identity & Access Management (IAM) program at Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT)...

IAM Open House a HUIT Hit

August 14, 2015

Few things sound better on a hot summer's day than taking time out for some ice cream — and at the end of a work day, sharing a scoop with our colleagues across HUIT was an even more delicious recipe. Nearly 100 attendees stopped by the Identity & Access Management program's open house on Thursday, Aug. 13, for treats, talks, and a taste of what's on the IAM program's agenda, from two-step verification and the rollout of HarvardKey (both coming this fall!) to updates on "person of interest" sponsored accounts, migration of IAM services to the cloud, and more.

"We were so...

IAM Showcases Collaboration Solutions at IT Summit

June 9, 2015

HUIT's fifth annual IT Summit — itself an opportunity for information technology staff from across the Harvard Community to collaborate on important topics on Harvard's IT radar — proved to be the ideal venue for the Identity & Access Management (IAM) team to showcase their efforts in helping Harvard faculty, students, staff, and researchers more effectively collaborate both within and outside of the University.

IAM Boosts User Security with Nov. 12 Rollout of Two-Step Verification

May 8, 2015

While it may seem like a new IT security threat makes the headlines on a daily basis, the practice of keeping end users from harm still relies heavily on maintaining strong security at login. That's why the Identity and Access Management (IAM) program at Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) will be rolling out two-step verification (also known as multifactor authentication) on Nov. 12, 2015 in conjunction with the launch of HarvardKey, the University's new unified credential for access to services like email, desktop, and Web resources using a single login name and password....

IAM Expands POI Schema to Include Sponsored Affiliations

March 10, 2015

Many Harvard Community users fit easily into a simple categorization for their user type: undergraduate student, faculty member, alumna. But there are many who don’t — and to make access to Harvard resources easier for both those users and their people administrators, the Identity and Access Management (IAM) team at Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) is working to better classify role types for an important group of University affiliates.

Currently, there are five broad categories of affiliation for individuals who are given a Harvard identity. These include...

Harvard PIN3 User Authentication Successfully Decommissioned

February 3, 2015

In a milestone representing Harvard University Information Technology’s commitment to streamlined, consistent access control and improved end-user experience, the Identity & Access Management (IAM) program successfully decommissioned the deprecated PIN3 user authentication service on Jan. 26, 2015 — a move that will save $100,000 in hosting by the end of FY15. All Harvard applications that had been using this legacy service to log in users, 178 apps in all, have been moved to newer, more robust solutions provided by the IAM program.

The PIN3 service was created in the 2008-2009...
